Piran and Portorož: getting to the coast, and where the car has to stop

Piran and Portorož sit on the same short stretch of coast, twenty minutes apart on foot along the water, and are usually treated as one destination. They are not the same trip to arrive at, and knowing which one you are actually staying in changes what to expect from the last five minutes of the journey.

Why no car can reach a hotel door in Piran

Piran's old town is a Venetian-era peninsula built for people and carts, not cars, and it has stayed that way. Every visitor, in a taxi, a rental car or a tour bus, stops at Fornače, the car park on the approach road, and continues on foot or on the small shuttle bus that runs the last stretch into town.

For a hotel inside the old walls this means the same five minutes with a suitcase that a Ljubljana old-town hotel involves: a short walk rather than a door-to-door arrival, however the trip there was booked.

Portorož is the easier base

Portorož, the resort strip next door, is an ordinary drivable town: hotels with their own car parks, a promenade rather than a walled centre, and a beach the old town does not have. A car reaches the door here without any of Piran's restriction, and Piran itself is a twenty-minute walk or a five-minute local bus away for the evening.

The choice between the two is really a choice between staying inside the postcard and staying a short walk from it with parking included.

Getting there without a car

A direct bus runs from Ljubljana a few times a day, in around two and a half hours. It is a fair option for a light traveller with a fixed schedule, and worth checking the current timetable rather than an old one: coastal routes get thinned out of season.

A private transfer

One way from Ljubljana is €135 for the sedan and €190 for the van, per car, straight to Fornače or, for Portorož, straight to the hotel. For a day trip rather than a stay, the return fare and the full-day rate both cover a car that waits while you walk the old town and drive you back the same evening.
